Our simple machines lesson series includes six simple machine topics: pulleys, levers, inclined planes, wheel & axle, screws, and wedges. The lessons are designed for ease of use and have been field tested to help us develop the most effective experience for your children. The lessons all include a brief summary or overview of the general concepts followed by a list of materials and instructions on how to set-up the lesson. When helpful, we have included photos to help with the setup process. Lessons, also, include detailed teaching instructions. We have made an effort to include formative assessment questions that will help you not only gauge student understanding, but also guide and modify instruction as needed.

Each of the six simple machine topics is supported by a handful of relevant and captivating activities that were designed to engage students while demonstrating the concepts in the most effective manner possible. It is possible to teach all of the lessons during one laboratory experience.  A classroom teacher could deliver each activity during one class period. Each lesson serves as a supporting experience for the week’s topic or chosen simple machine.
